Hands-On Lesson in Science

The Children’s Museum of Science and Technology in Troy is a place for hands-on discovery and exploration.
The Children’s Museum of Science and Technology (CMOST) in Troy has been around since 1954, and offers a hands-on way for children to explore and discover the worlds of science and technology.
“Our museum is primarily geared toward kids in pre-K through grade 6, and all of the exhibits are tied-in directly with New York State education standards,” says John Graydon Smith, CMOST president and CEO. “Students learn about science in their own school classrooms and then can enjoy a hands-on experience at the museum. The kids can touch everything, and we change-up our displays almost every month.”
CMOST also offers the area’s largest live animal collection, with more than 100 animals that cover 30 different species.
“All kids love animals, and our instructors conduct interesting teaching sessions with lizards, snakes, scorpions and owls,” Smith says.
The museum’s Weather Front exhibit allows youngsters to practice their own weather forecasts in front of a green screen, and then see it broadcast onto a large TV. There is also a 75-foot living Hudson River display, a Go Power Experience that teaches kids about electricity, and a Lally Digital Dome and Planetarium that makes outer space exploration fun.
“We also have plans to set up a full-functioning, multi-disciplinary Junior Science Lab that is scaled down for kids to do physics, chemistry and biology experiments,” Smith says. “It will house a working electron microscope, making CMOST the only facility in the country that will have an electron microscope available to the public.”
