A Really Big Man on a Schenectady Campus
Published Apr 15, 2006
Tech Valley has a distinct connection to a U.S. president.
Chester Arthur attended Union College in Schenectady. After his graduation in 1848, he studied law at home and eventually formed his own law firm in 1856.
He served as the country’s 21st president from 1881-1884, following the assassination of James Garfield. In 1884, Arthur returned to his New York law practice and died two years later in New York City at age 57.
Arthur was known for running an honest administration, and for being an elegant and well-dressed president. About 80 suits hung in his closet.
