New York County Known for Mastodon Skeletons
Published Apr 15, 2006
Orange County claims to have more mastodon skeletons unearthed than any other place on Earth.
One of the most amazing was discovered in 1845, with the entire skeleton remaining intact. An 11,000-year-old mastodon was found near the town of Newburgh, with the creature still in an upright standing position with its legs thrust forward and its head tilted upward, apparently gasping for air.
The huge animal is named for John Warren, a professor of anatomy at Harvard University who bought the remains. The Warren Mastodon was acquired by the American Museum of Natural History in 1925.
