Kingston was New York’s First Capital
Published Apr 15, 2006

Albany was not the first capital of New York – it was Kingston.
The town served as “the place to be” during the Revolutionary and post-Revolutionary period, and was where the documents were signed that declared New York a state in 1788. Kingston was also where New York’s first governor, George Clinton, was inaugurated, and where the first Supreme Court of the State convened.
