Flavorful Ales On Tap at Tech Valley Breweries
Published Nov 05, 2008

Tech Valley offers a bevy of craft breweries producing high-quality beer and ale.
Innovation is not the sole province of Tech Valley’s knowledge enterprises. Indeed, a collection of craft brewers spread out among the region is turning out a variety of beers that are turning heads.
Lake Placid Craft Brewing Co. was started as a seven-barrel brewing operation in 1996 in a pub in the Adirondack village.
The business has since expanded into a 13,000-square-foot facility that has capacity to turn out almost 5,000 barrels per year of Ubu Ale, 46er Pale Ale, Lake Placid IPA and seasonal beers.
Cooper’s Cave Ale Co. in Glens Falls produces more than 20 beers, including six year-round varieties, such as Pale Ale and Radeau Red Ale, and several seasonal varieties.
“We’re the smallest brewery by volume in New York state and we’re proud of that,” says Patty Bethel, owner of Cooper’s Cave Ale Co. “We try to stay local – our delivery area is only as far as a horse could have traveled in a day.”
Keegan Ales in Kingston brews Old Capital, which refers to Kingston’s heritage as New York’s first capital, as well as Hurricane Kitty and Mother’s Milk, described as a “dark, rich, and creamy milk stout with hints of chocolate.”
Brown’s Brewing Co. in Troy serves its dozen lagers and ales in a 300-seat restaurant in a 160-year-old converted warehouse that now includes a deck and beer garden overlooking the Hudson River. In 2007, the 65-employee company began bottling its Brown’s Pale Ale, Brown’s Oatmeal Stout and Brown’s India Pale for sale at beverage centers and specialty stores in and around the Capital District.
In downtown Albany, C.H. Evans Brewing Company at the Albany Pump Station keeps brew lovers coming back with its full-bodied ales.
“Our clientele really enjoys full-flavored beers,” says George de Piro, brewmaster at C.H. Evans Brewing, which has won several awards, including a silver medal at the World Beer Cup in April 2008. “Once people know what good beer tastes like, they really enjoy full-bodied varieties.”
