New School Lives Up to Tech Valley Moniker
Published Apr 15, 2007

The branding of New York’s “Tech Valley” will be nearly complete with the opening day of what is being hailed as a one-of-a-kind public high school.

Tech Valley High, slated to open in the fall of 2007, will focus on math, science and technology. Expected to draw students from 48 school districts in seven counties, the high school will meet first at the MapInfo facility in the Rensselaer Technology Park with plans for its own campus on a fairly aggressive time continuum.

The product of a partnership between Capital Region BOCES, Questar III and a host of business, education and government leaders, the school received significant funding from, among other sources, the New Technology Foundation, which is supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Questar III Superintendent James Baldwin says the school has received tremendous support.

“We have many institutions of higher education and an emerging technology business sector that understands the need for us to focus our students on math, science and technology,” he says.

Capital Region BOCES Superintendent Barbara Nagler agrees, adding: “People recognize a need for something new. [Tech Valley High] fits into everything we’re doing here in Tech Valley.”
