Web Exclusive Content Bringing Campus Living Downtown
Published May 19, 2008

Students at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute will have a new option next year that will take them out of traditional campus housing.
RPI has kicked off a project that will renovate a former 154-room hotel into a residence hall to house undergrad students.
School officials say the plan will infuse about 300 students into Troy’s downtown, where they no doubt will patronize shops and stores. The new residence hall will be at the bottom of the Rensselaer Approach — the granite staircase that symbolizes the connection between the City of Troy and RPI, the nation’s oldest technological university.
About 150 RPI staff members already work out of three buildings in downtown Troy.
