A New Work Week at Albany-Colonie Chamber
Published Jul 02, 2008

Offering an example to other employers, the Albany-Colonie Regional Chamber of Commerce is giving its staff members an option that could save them money and help the environment as well.
As of July 7, the chamber is implementing a workweek of four 10-hour days instead of the traditional five, eight-hour days, thus saving each employee one day’s round-trip commute each week and some transportation-related expenses.
“We realize how important it is to practice ‘green’ thinking,” said Lyn Taylor, the chamber’s president/CEO.
Half of the chamber’s staff will take off Mondays and the other half will take off Fridays but the chamber’s offices will remain staffed five days a week. A four-day workweek will be in place on a trial basis during July and August, after which the new policy will be evaluated and results shared with chamber members.
“We are confident that our employees will maintain, if not increase, their level of productivity during their four-day workweek, while saving money in terms of fuel consumption and practicing effective, environmental stewardship,” Taylor says.
