Yogurt Maker Brings Its Cultures to Tech Valley
Published Apr 15, 2008

The largest dairy producer in Greece is coming to New York – to make yogurt.

FAGE USA (pronounced FAH-yeah) is constructing a $70 million, 110,000-square-foot yogurt manufacturing plant in the Johnstown Industrial Park. The plant will open in early 2008 and employ more than 60 people in the production of FAGE Total yogurt.

The Greek company introduced Total yogurt to the United States in 2000, and today it is available at major supermarkets, gourmet and specialty food stores from coast to coast. It can be found locally in Fulton County at all Hannaford Supermarket locations.

“FAGE sells a container of Total yogurt for about $2 in this part of New York, and storekeepers can’t keep enough on the shelves,” says Lisa McCoy, marketing director for the Fulton County Economic Development Corp.

Since 2005, Fulton County EDC officials have been traveling overseas to the FAGE plant in Athens, Greece to complete the negotiations that would establish the company in New York’s Tech Valley.

“FAGE will immediately become one of the largest customers of the Gloversville-Johnstown Wastewater Treatment Facility and the Johnstown water department, using 150,000 gallons of water per day for their yogurt,” says Jeff Bray, executive vice president of the Fulton County EDC. “The magnitude of FAGE’s investments will create a positive impact on agriculture, construction, transportation and manufacturing job sectors of the entire Mohawk Valley region.”
