School of Country Wisdom Celebrates Farming
Published Apr 15, 2007

The School of Country Wisdom helps people reconnect with the land, with courses based on the skills and traditions passed down through generations of local family farmers.

Established in 2003 by the Schoharie County Chamber of Commerce’s Agriculture Committee – in conjunction with the Schoharie County Planning and Development Agency, the Schoharie County Farm Bureau, SUNY Cobleskill, the Schoharie Valley Association and the Schoharie Cooperative Extension – the school helps preserve Schoharie County’s farming heritage while encouraging economic development. “The Agriculture Committee was looking for a way for our local farmers to add to their revenue streams,” says Jodie Rutt, acting executive director of the Schoharie County Chamber of Commerce.

A school without walls, learning takes place in the picturesque Schoharie County countryside throughout the year. Approximately 25 local farmers/instructors within the 600 square miles of the county share their expertise with residents and tourists with a variety of fun courses supporting country living. You can learn everything from how to use freshly grown herbs to quilting and caring for llamas. Courses range from $15-$85 depending on materials (not including the bus ride).

“We get a lot of repeat attendance. Classes are a mix of locals and tourists – some from as far as New York City – who are looking for a country experience,” Rutt says.
